A collection of images of taken by G. E. Kidder Smith (1913-1997), who was an architect, author, and architectural photographer. The collection represents color documentation of the buildings he photographed in black and white for his three-volume work Architecture of the United States, (Museum of Modern Art, 1981). The original slide archive represented 12 years of field research, and 135,000 miles of travel. The collection covers more than 800 American buildings from the pre-Columbian period to 1978. MIT acquired the image archive in 1985. The collection also contains over a thousand images of the architecture of India. These photographs were taken during a trip through India in the early 1970s.
